One mystery is solved, and I have audio output again.

It required killing the esd ("EsounD") daemon that Gnome 
apparently starts up without being asked to do so.  And then I 
went through the sound devices until I found the one that worked 
for output, namely /dev/dsp2.

Now I can go back to learning what all linrad's knobs do.

Q: what id the numerical histogram that shows up to the right of 
the wide waterfall when you hit "F" in regular operating mode?
