The earliest kernel that I sucessfully installed was 2.2.12 = RedHat6.1.
I was not able to get sound running on older ones.

All Linrad versions work on kernel 2.2.12 but old Linrad versions
do not work with modern compilers. There have been several changes
in the GCC package and there have been bugs in it that made it necessary
to put the include files in a particular order in some cases.
Suddenly all header files were required to end with a newline
which was not necessary under older kernels so older Linrad
versions do not have these newlines.

1) Select the Linux distribution that fits your hardware.
     Pentium I 100 MHz 16 Megabytes RAM  =>  RedHat 6.1
     Pentium MMX 266MHz => Mandrake 8.0
     Modern => Modern

2) Under old distributions you should probably run OSS
     for the soundcard(s)

3) Compile svgalib-1.9.21 without helper. I think it
     will always be sucessful but I have not yet tried
     (it takes a lot of time)

Actually Linrad is more or less frozen at 01-34 because the next
one will probably be the very experimental 02-00 which may be
too unstable for regular usage. I will put some goodies into it
to make sure there will be a reasonable number of brave test pilots;-)
