Nice Roger, you have got it! Congratulations!

I think that the best thing you can do now is to fill a debian-installer
bug report, in order to avoid this issues to future Debian SATA users.

If you have free time please have a look at this page and see if your
bug is reported:

Take a look at 278203 bug, they talk about the ata_piix driver.
